Winter trip to Shimla ,know everything about Shimla to plan your next trip
SHIMLA
Queen of Hills
This time i was so determined to witness the cold winter in Himalayas with snowfall. Made numerous travel plans which later flopped. Suddenly one day everything favors me and book the ticket for the first trip of the year and that too to the summer hills of Himachal ,Shimla .This trip was budget friendly and relied completely upon The Great Indian Railways. There was a few extra happiness this time. Firstly i was totally free from my work pressure and i don't want to count my vacation days and rush back to office ,secondly my mother is accompanying me and this is her first trip beyond Bangalore. More over this trip was for myself to flush out the loudness of my mind.
Shimla is located on the foothills of Himalayas and was known as the Summer capital of British India. Comparatively a perfect and easy to access place for a quick vacation from other Himalayan city. Each city in Himachal Pradesh have its own charming. As Shimla is easily connected to the nearby cities like Punjab, Haryana and Kalka though rail and road ways, throughout the year the beautiful hamlet witness a huge number of tourist. This post gives you the complete details to plan a trip to Shimla.
How to reach Shimla.
By Train
We traveled from down south to the foothills of Himalaya by train .A 44hrs train from Ernakulam town to Delhi and 4 hrs. journey from Delhi to Kalka .A picturesque 5 hrs. journey from Kalka to Shimla. Pretty intense right? But i bet its worth the try. If you haven't read my Kalka Shimla Toy Train journey ,Click here . As i mentioned this trip was budget friendly and we completely relied on Indian Railways. If you are Traveling from Delhi or any other city you would take less time than mine. If you don't want to spend too much time on Kalka Toy Train you can opt Delhi to Chandigarh Train and from there taxi or Bus to Shimla. For one way it was below 5000/-rupees for four of us from Ernakulam to Shimla.
Train journey is always exciting. Through the colorful fields, below the mountains ,above the bridge it goes on and on. Vendors in the train call out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Better opt for veg foods to avoid sickness. There are also packed and sealed Haldiram's food both veg and non veg which ranges from 100/-to 180/-. You can even buy fruits when halting at stations. Always book a confirmed seat tickets for long journey. Don't give a chance for waiting list tickets. It depend upon luck. We was worried about the pandemic situation traveling by train. .But people were extra cautious wearing mask and using sanitizers all time .Only thing bothered me was the loud snoring of people while sleeping.
By Bus
As i mentioned before Shimla is pretty much connected with major cities like Punjab, Haryana , Kalka and Delhi. Your mode of transport depend upon from which part of India you are coming from. Travelling to Shimla by bus is a popular means of transport . There are numerous buses like A/C ,Semi Sleeper, Volvo and ordinary from nearby cities to Himachal .If you plan to visit Shimla coming back from Manali or other district of Himachal, there are HRTC buses and other buses available which you can opt as your comfort.
By Flight
The nearest Airport is Jubbarhatti Airport, only 23 km away from Shimla City Center. If you are out of time the best option to arrive in Shimla is by Flight.
By Car
If you are a road trip enthusiast don't think more take your car and just drive. You can also get taxi from Delhi to Shimla. The drive is in fact not so long ,it is 342 km from Delhi to Shimla and can be covered in 7 hrs. It will be the most scenic drive ever.
Transportation is always a big step to take for every trip. It can be of your choice according to your comfort, time and Budget .To travel in Shimla to nearby places you can hire a taxi or there are HRTC buses .I recommend taxi because, buses may drop you at the bus station near by the preferred location, from where you have to walk to the location.
